Biography

London merchant and Jamaican slave-owner, resident in Jamaica in the 1820s.

  1. Born 07/12/1791 and baptised 08/01/1792 in St George Hanover Square, London, son of John and Margaret Elin. In Jamaica in the 1820s: 1824 Jamaica Almanac shows him as Assistant Judge or Magistrate for Kingston. 1823 and 1826 signed Slave Register for 5 slaves in Kingston as owner; 1826 signed Slave Register for 109 slaves in Port Royal as Receiver of estate of Arthur Savage. 

  2. John Elin (born 08/08/1814), son of Elizabeth Harriot by John Elin, was baptised in Kingston 06/10/1816. John Elin (born 20/12/1819) and Margaret Elin (born 25/08/1821), children of Elizabeth Harriett by J.B. Elin, both baptised in Kingston 30/10/1821. Anna Eliza Elin (born 09/06/1823) and Jane Frances Elin (born 29/07/1824), children of Eliza Harrick [sic?] "free of colour" by John B. Elin, both baptised in Kingston 01/05/1825. Thomas Henry Elin, son of John Elin and Elizabeth Harriett, "coloured", parents not married, was baptised in Kingston 05/05/1826.

  3. George and William (no dates of birth given), sons of Jno Bloxam and Elizabeth Elin of 17 Dorset Place, father's occupation 'Gentleman', were baptised in Marylebone, London, 27/10/1832. The place of birth for both boys is given as Jamaica in later censuses. Frederick, son of John and Elizabeth Elin of 12 Park Place, father's occupation 'Merchant', was baptised in Marylebone 15/07/1834.

  4. Dissolution 1830 of partnerships of John Steel and Steel, Elin & Co., viz John Steel, John B. Elin & Alexander R. Scot, merchants and agents at Liverpool firom [sic] John Steel, and at Kingston in Jamaica, firm Steel, Elin & Co. Jan 1 [1830]. In 1832 Elin's enslaved people on Wakefield estate St Anns were registered by Alex Reid Scott as attorney of JB Elin. 

  5. John Elin, age 45, merchant, born in Middlesex, was living at Kent Terrace, Marylebone, in 1841 with his wife [undecipherable name] age 40, children John age 20 and Frederick age 7, one male servant and three female servants. In 1851 he was aged 57 at 7 Kent Terrace, St Marylebone, West India & General Merchant with Elizabeth his wife aged 55 (born in Jamaica) and Frederick (aged 16). In 1861 he was at 6 Ulster Terrace, Marylebone, with his wife Elizabeth, age 67, son Frederick, his daughter-in-law, two grandchildren and four female servants. He was at 7 Kent Terrace again in 1871. Died Marylebone Oct-Nov-Dec 1873 age 81.

  6. Probate 31/10/1873 (died 4 Oct 1873) effects under £160,000. Will with two codicils of John Bloxam Elin late of 4 Great Winchester street buildings who died at 7 Kent Terrace Regents Park proved by John Elin of 4 Great Winchester street, George Elin of Hertford Esq the sons and Thomas William Bischoff of 4 Great Winchester street, solicitor the executors.

  7. A baptism hasn't been found for Elizabeth Harriott in Jamaica. According to the 1851 census she was born there c. 1796. An approximate birth year of 1794 is indicated in the 1861 census and at her burial in Marylebone in 1869 (when her address was given as 8 Ulster Terrace). No marriage has been found for John Bloxam Elin and Elizabeth Harriott in Jamaica or Britain.

  8. Frederick Elin left £4643 16s 9d when he died on the Isle of Wight in 1881. George who apparently inherited Lea House (Esquire of Lea House, Hertford), died in 1896, leaving £20,082 0s 8d. The eldest surviving son, John, married Mary Amelia Hitchins, daughter of Richard James Cade Hitchins (q.v.) in Marylebone in 1845. John Elin left £149,670 9s 9d in 1900.
