1757 - 1808
Absentee slave-owner in Jamaica, the subject of Romney's portrait Richard Newman Harding or The Pink Boy, 'a notable huntsman who also held the manor of Romford or Mawneys.'
Baptised 26/05/1757 in Croydon, Surrey. Aged 19 years and of St James, Westminster, when he married Harriet Schutz of Gillingham, Norfolk, aged 17 years, in 1776.
Inherited West Ham Abbey and other property in Essex under the will of his grandfather Richard Newman (proved 1766), following which he adopted the surname Newman.
The will of Richard Newman Harding Newman lately called Richard Newman Harding of Nelmes Essex was proved 15/12/1808. In it mentioned he was tenant in common with his brother John of a plantation called Blue Hole in Hanover, Jamaica which he devised to his friend John Russell and Robert Dewar of Tempsford in Bedfordshire Esquire to hold upon trust, the profits to pay to his wife Rosamund an annuity of £300 sterling, the property in Jamaica itself passing to his son Thomas Harding subject to the annuity. He provided that if his son Thomas secured for the benefit of his [the testator's] wife an annuity of £200 p.a. on his Essex estates, in addition to a £200 p.a. annuity granted to her earlier in the will and secured on English property, then the annuity in Jamaica would drop away.
