John Tharp III, of Green Pond

Biography

Planter, of Green Pond, St James, Jamaica. Son of John Tharpe II (1671-) and his wife Sarah nee Knowles. Died in 1765 leaving two young sons, William and John [V], who inherited his estate. His wife Ann remarried, to John Stevens of London. In 1773 William and John V granted their mother an annuity for 10 years in lieu of dower on Green Pond estate.

John Thorpe junior was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 1610 acres of land in St James.

John Tharp of St James, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1765. Slave-ownership at probate: 139 of whom 79 were listed as male and 60 as female. 22 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £9580.51 Jamaican currency of which £8005 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £0 currency debts and £46.61 currency plate.
