Son of James Irving the elder and his wife Elizabeth nee Motte. Born at Ironshore, Jamaica, in 1765. Educated at a school in Kensington, England, from a young age, where he was living when his father died in 1775. Probably in the Royal Navy as a young man. In Jamaica in 1795, by which time he had acquired an estate in South Carolina called The Grove. Married Susannah, daughter of Richard Prince of Feversham, Cambridgeshire, in Jamaica 10/03/1796. Managed Ironshore and Hartfield from about 1793 to 1803. Moved to America in 1803. Died in Philadelphia, 06/04/1813.
