Owner of Woodside estate in St Mary, Jamaica which he inherited on the death of his father John Neilson when William John Neilson was around 9 years of age. Married Jane Eliza and had six children by the time of his death in 1829. Taken by his mother to live in England after the death of his father, he had returned to Jamaica by the early 1810s and described himself in his will (written in 1828) as a 'practitioner of physic and surgery'.
