Biography

Slave-owner in Jamaica, absentee. Nugent sought the removal of Nathaniel Beckford as a Member of the Council in 1804, citing his absence from duty for 7 or 8 years. Beckford reportedly returned the following year and was President of the Council in 1806. Natural son of Alderman William Beckford.

  1. The Chancery case of Susannah Hyde Beckford v Kemble and others in 1822 covered the 1763 marriage settlement and subsequent mortgage (to Richard Beckford and Rice James) by Nathaniel and Elizabeth Beckford of estates in Jamaica. The estates were unnamed but from other evidence included Spring Garden and Oxford, both in St Thomas-in-the-East.
