Hannah Pownall (née Pownall)

Biography

  1. Born in Jamaica 20/01/1815, the reputed daughter of James Corne Pownall by "free mulatto" Sarah Watt. Inherited a share in Silver Hill estate in St Andrew, Jamaica, in trust with her six siblings and six of her first cousins, on the death of his father in 1824. Her father's will stipulated that his daughters would forfeit their inheritance if any of them returned to Jamaica unless with husbands.

  2. Married her first cousin Rev. William Lowe Pownall in Cambridge, 18/09/1839. Living at Olney, Buckinghamshire, in 1841. A visitor at 1 Regent Terrace, Madron, Cornwall, in 1851 with the occupation "Governess". Her husband was second master at Derby Grammar School, 1851-1853. Neither have been traced in later censuses but Rev. Pownall was a curate at Painstown, County Carlow, Ireland, 1853-1860, domestic chaplain to the Duke of Leinster 1860-1869 and curate (later vicar) of Shankhill, County Kilkenny, 1869-1905. Their four children were born in Carlow, Ireland, between 1853 and 1863. William Lowe Pownall was a widower living at Carlow when remarried in London in 1865.
