Biography

  1. Son of David Bernard and Judith Bernard senior (q.v.), and brother of Judith Bernard junior (q.v.) and William Rhodes Bernard (1794-1868) (q.v.), and cousin of Charles Edward Bernard M.D. of Childermas (q.v.). Adm pens (aged 23) Magdalene Cambridge 27/10/1824, son of David of Jamaica and Judith Brown [=Bowen]. School Winchester. BA 1829.  Ord. Deacon 1829, priest 1829. Curate of Wraxall Somerset 1841-4, Holy Trinity Weymouth 1849-52, Cheltenham 1856-62. Chaplain to Bath Penitentiary 1864-9. Lived latterly at Wickwar Gloucs. Died 14/11/1885 at Cheltenham.

  2. Samuel Edward Bernard married Caroline Eloisa Bowen (daughter of Robert Bowen, q.v.) in Weston-super-Mare in 1827. Their only child, Charlotte Emmeline, was baptised in Pynchley, Northamptonshire, 29/11/1829. The death of Caroline Eloisa Bernard was registered Q4 1837 in Cheltenham.

  3. He remarried, to Mary Ann Walker, in 1839 in Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire. They had at least five children: James Walker (baptised 1840, father's address Wraxall, Somerset); David Edward (baptised 1842, father's address was 13 Crescent, Taunton); William Larkins (baptised 1843, father's address Mary Street, Taunton); Joseph Bowen (baptised 1845, father's address 3 Portland Place, Walcot, Somerset); Laura Isabella (baptised 1849, father's address Weymouth, Dorset)

  4. In 1841 he was living at Crescent, Taunton, with wife Mary, daughter Charlotte age 18, son James age 1, one male servant and three female servants. In 1851 he was at 16 Terrace, Melcolme

  5. Will of Samuel Edward Bernard who died 14/11/1885 late of 12 Cambray Place Cheltenham proved 14/12/1885 effects £3983 12s 4d.
