Biography

Rev. Stair M'Quhae, Minister of St Enox [sic], awarded compensation with others as executor and trustee of Alexander M'Dowal (probably his brother-in-law) for Two Mile Wood in St Catherine, Jamaica. The co-awardees were Mrs Charles M'Quhae otherwise M'Dowal, the widow, and Quintin Kennedy and John Phillips (each of whom q.v.).

  1. Stair Park McQuhae, born 27/03/1795, youngest son of Rev. William McQuhae, minister of St Quivox and Father of the Synod, and his second wife Mary Lawrie. His middle name is the maiden surname of his father's first wife. Attended University of Glasgow. Suceeded his father at St Quivox in 1823. Retired from "bad health" in 1859. Died at St Croix, Rownhams, Hampshire, 08/03/1872.

  2. "[14/02/1835] Quo die Stair McQuhae, Minister of St Quivox and Margaret McKenzie in Ayr gave their names to be Proclaimed & after Proclamation they were Married." Presumably Margaret died before 1843 and Stair McQue remarried: "[23/04/1843] Rev. Stair McQuae in this Parish and Louisa Georgina MacKenzie, in the Parish of St Sulphice[?]. 1 day."

  3. In 1841, Dr McQuhae, age 49 was living at the Manze of St Quinox with William McQuahe, age 3, Jane McKenzie, age 65, of independent means, four female servants and one male servant. In 1851, Stair McQuhae was living at St Quixox Manse with his wife Louisa G, age 36, born Gibraltar, children Carolina age 6, Mary L, age 5, John age 3 and Louisa age 2, his mother-in-law Caroline Mackenzie, age 53, born France, a visitor named Jane Bow, age 57, two female servants and a nurse. In 1861 Stair McQuhae, aged 65 [possibly 60] Clergyman of the Church of Scotland born Scotland, was living at Temple Building, Abbey, Romsey Hampshire with his wife Louisa Georgina Mackenzie (born Gibraltar) and daughters Caroline 16, Mary 15 and Louisa 12 all born Scotland.

  4. Will of Rev. Stair McQuhae DD formerly of St Quivox Ayrshire but late of St Evox Rownham County of Southampton who died 08/03/1872 proved 10/04/1872 by Francois Mackenzie of Barnstaple Esq., one of the executors, effects under £18,000. The Rev. Stair presumably named and probably built the house known as St Evox in Rownham and Nursling, Hampshire.
