Charlotte Neate

1777 - 1857

Claimant or beneficiary

Awarded a share in the compensation for Zetland estate on Nevis after counterclaiming with Millicent Mary Reeve of Gloucester Place Portman Sq, widow, and Catherine Fox of Montague Place Russell Square spinster as mortgagees in fee by indentures 15th & 16th April 1774 principal and interest £13657 19s 0d.

The connections between the three counterclaimants and the nature of the 1774 mortgage have not yet been fully identified, but LBS believes that of the co-awardees Charlotte Neate was the daughter and Catherine Fox the niece of Rev. Richard Neate, and that the mortgage flowed from a deed dated 28/11/1769 to which Rev. Richard Neate (q.v.) was party.

  1. Baptism of Charlotte, daughter of Rev. Richard Neate and Anne, his wife, born 29/11/1777 baptised 02/02/1778.

  2. Will of Charlotte Neate spinster of No. 2 Coleshill Street Eaton Square Middlesex proved 18/02/1857. She left her nephew Charles Edward Neate 19 guineas and the remainder of her estate to Ann Maginnis of 26 Fulham Place Paddington, not further identified in the will.

  3. Millicent Mary Reeve had died c. 1836, her will, as widow of Gloucester Place Portman Square, being proved 28/06/1836. She was apparently the widow of William Reeve of Leadenham Lincolnshire (1751-1821, High Sheriff 1808) and the daughter of John King of Ashby-de-la-Launde (Captain Grenadier Guards), having married 14/08/1782.

T71/882 Nevis No. 37, which identifies her as Charlotte Neate of Sloane Terrace spinster. 'Agreement between the counterclaimants received at the hearing 27 Oct 1836'; Archives at Yale, British Caribbean Collections, Deed between Patrick O'Flaherty, late of Nevis now Westminster (London), and Rev. Richard Neate of Holborn, of Middx., and Archibald Thomson, of Nevis, 1769 October 28, [accessed 04/05/2020].

  2. PROB 11/2246/291.

  3. PROB 11/1863; [accessed 04/02/2013]. One of her grandchildren was Ellis Philip Fox Reeve, perhaps suggesting a linkage to the co-claimant Catherine Fox.
