Biography

Awarded part of the compensation for Collen's estate on Antigua as acting executor of Jane Carr (q.v.), execution creditor and mortgagee. Jane Carr was his sister (or possibly his aunt, if this refers to Christopher Owens the younger, son of Christopher Owens).

  1. The will of Jane Carr widow of the Island of Antigua proved 03/10/1820 identifies Christopher Owens as her brother and shows strong links to Cove [or Cobh] in Cork. This is conceivably the same woman as the Mrs Jane Carr of Barbadoes, an annuitant on Eshott Hall estate in Northumberland, aged 56 as of 1783, and widow of Thomas Carr (died 1793), who had apparently moved to Antigua by 1793.

  2. Christopher Owens of Cork was a pioneer of steam shipping, with his partner Michael O'Brien building the 'City of Cork', a wooden paddle steamer, in 1815.
