Biography

Owner of the Meerzorg estate in British Guiana after the death of her husband Thomas Cathrey (q.v.) in 1821 after the couple made a 'mutual will' to consolidate their joint property.

  1. In 1841 Joanna Cathrey aged 45 and five children (Henry 25 George 20 Maria 25 Marian 20 and Joanna 15) were living at Henrietta [Place] Bathwick. In 1891 Johanna Cathrey aged 69 born Clifton Bristol and Maria Cathrey aged 78 born South America Essequibo were living at 3 Mount Vernon, St Leonard Devon: these must have been daughters of Johanna Wilhelmina and Thomas Cathrey.

Sources

Will of Thomas Cathrey proved 22/12/1821 PROB 11/1651/284. Her will is also catalogued ('Johanna Withelmina Cathrey born Knotman') under the same date as PROB 11/1651/285 but it is clear she did not die before this date: no record of her death (which must have been after 1841) has yet been found.

  1. 1891 census online.
