Biography

Sir William Barton, head of Barton, Irlam and Higginson, and 'one of the oldest merchants' of Liverpool on his death in 1826.  Knighted May 9 1816 when Mayor of Liverpool. 'Sir William was a warm supporter of the King and Constitution'.

  1. Will of Sir William Barton of Liverpool [made in 1822] proved 26/03/1838. He left his niece Ann Barton Russell £5000, his sister-in-law Margaret Ann Simpson of Bath £1000, and Neville Loftus Bland, Sarah Otway Bland and Elizabeth Bland, the children of his sister-in-law Sarah Bland of Bath, £1000 each. He left William Irlam, son of his partner George Irlam, £2000 and each of George Irlam's other eight children £500. He left £1000 to his god-daughter Margaret Tobin daughter of Sir John Tobin of Oakhill, and £4000 to Mary Evans of Finch [?] Street Liverpool as a token of his regard for her care of his late wife. He left £2000 to William Barton 'the son of my faithful black servant Prince William Barton.' He left £1000 each to his partner George Irlam, to Sir John Tobin and Thomas George Massey of Liverpool, who were his trustees. He left his estate in trust to pay the legacies, to advance £3000 to his nephew George Barton Russell and to pay the income on the remainder to his niece Ann Barton Russell for life, and then the principal to her children.

  2. Sir William Barton's main heir Ann [or Anne] Barton Russell married the naval officer Paul Griffith Panton, who died in 1872 leaving £30,000.
