James Robert Scott

1790 - 1833

Biography

Son of Robert Scott of Coudhouse and his wife Margaret nee Chisholme. Baptised in Peebles in 1790. Inherited a share in Thomas's River, North Hall, Health Crawl and Breadland Pen in Clarendon, Jamaica, from his uncle William Chisholme who died in 1802. James Robert Scott of Coudhouse, Roxburghshire, and of Thirlestaine House, Cheltenham, married Harriet, youngest daughter of Thomas Gray Esquire of Cheltenham, 09/04/1823.

  1. Will of James Robert Scott of Jedburgh proved 07/03/1833. In the will made in 1823 he left £1000 in trust to his brother William C. Chisholme, Robert Scott and Alexander Scott for uses specified in a side-letter, and the interest on the rest of his estate to his wife for life, with half the principal passing to any children at 21 and the other half passing to them at his wife's death. This was conditional on his wife living in Scotland and associating with his blood relatives, who were solely responsible for the education of his children. If she lived in England, the provision for her was to be one-third of the above. There was no mention of property or enslaved people in the West Indies.
