Robert Shedden junior

1777 - 1856

Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

Son of Robert Shedden senior (q.v.) and partner until 1810 in the family firm of West India merchants. It appears highly likely that he was the Robert Shedden who was awarded part of the compensation for Stewart Castle estate in 1835: the alternative, Robert Shedden of Palace Chambers (1819-1849), would have been a minor at the point of compensation.

  1. Born in Virginia c. 1777, married Millicent Munro 28/06/1802 in Marylebone. High Sheriff for Southampton.

  2. Living in Bevois Mount, Southampton, in the 1841 census, age 65, 'Deputy S Magistrate', with his wife Millicent, 55, Agatha Shedden, 55, his daughter Emily Cary, 35, and granddaughter Edith Cary, 10. Living with his wife Millicent age 64 and daughter Emily Munro Cary age 44, among others, in Tormoham, Devon in the 1851 census.

  3. Almost certainly the Robert Shedden whose death was registered at Newton Abbott Devon Q4 1856. The Robert Shedden mate in HM Royal Navy of Westminster (q.v. under Robert Shedden of Palace Chambers) whose will was proved 02/08/1850 was Robert Shedden jun.'s nephew and the son of William Shedden (d. c.1820) and Wilhelmina Shedden, to whom her son Robert Shedden of HM Royal Navy left his 2/10ths share in the Stewart Castle estate.
